Watch for These 4 Common Winter Electrical Problems

Electrical problems can occur at any time of the year, but there are some electrical issues that can be unique to the winter months. At Countryside Electric, Inc., we see many of these issues throughout the winter and would like to share them with you so you can be ready when they occur. Be prepared for whatever the cold Columbus temps may bring by learning more about these four common winter electrical problems.

Watch for These 4 Common Winter Electrical Problems

1. Outdated Equipment

During winter weather, electrical systems have to work that much harder to keep up with the demand for heat or power. If you have outdated equipment in your home, this can result in inconsistent heat, regular power outages, or even electrical fires. The rule of thumb is that a heating appliance older than five years may be outdated and need to be replaced.

2. Static Electricity

Do you remember as a child when your hair would stick up in the winter due to the dry conditions? Static electricity increases greatly during the winter months. While it can be fun to watch your hair do funny things, it can also be potentially dangerous. If a damaged electrical current or flammable substance comes in contact with static electricity, this could result in powerful electrical shocks. One of the best ways to counteract this is by setting up a humidifier in the drier areas of your Columbus home.

3. Frayed Wires

Worn or frayed electrical wires can cause problems at any time. In winter, they pose a potentially hazardous risk. With dry air and cold temps, these damaged wires are a fire hazard and can lead to disastrous problems. It only takes one broken wire to light a spark in your home.

4. Power Outages

This common winter electrical problem should come as no surprise to many. With holiday lights, heating systems, generators, and more, power outages are more than common during the colder seasons. If this becomes more of a regular issue in your home, you may want to consider upgrading your home’s power capacity. This will accommodate modern heating systems and high-tech appliances.
