Be Prepared for a Power Outage with These 4 Tips

Thunderstorms, tornados, and snowstorms can all cause power outages in Columbus, OH, and the surrounding areas. The best way to wait out a power outage is to prepare for one before it strikes. Countryside Electric, Inc. recommends following these four tips so you will be more than ready for that next power outage.

1. Stock Electrical Supplies

Alternate sources of light, electricity, and heat are the main things you and your family will need during a power outage. Keep a stock of flashlights and fresh batteries available. Have a few portable chargers powered up and ready to go for charging cell phones. For power disruptions in winter, consider purchasing a non-electric heater that uses kerosene, propane, or natural gas.

2. Have a Plan for Medical Devices

Many essential medical devices, like breathing machines, sleep apnea masks, and dialysis equipment, use electricity to operate. There are life-saving medications that must be refrigerated, too. Develop a plan with your primary care provider on how to keep these machines operational and medications properly refrigerated during a blackout.

3. Use Appliances Safely

If you plan on using non-electric appliances like gas-powered generators or camp stoves during a power outage, you may want to install carbon monoxide detectors in your home. Using these types of appliances can lead to an increased risk of exposure to carbon monoxide. Be sure to never use equipment like this indoors and keep them at least 20 feet away from your home for safety.

4. Stock Food & Water

If the power goes out for more than a few hours, you and your family will need access to food and water without relying on appliances to cook or store them. Keep a few packs of bottled water and non-perishable food and canned goods in your pantry or basement. Also, do not open freezers and refrigerators as they can remain cold for around 48 hours if they’re not opened.
